Hurricane Melissa’s Impact in Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa’s impact across Jamaica is devastating. As one of our primary locations for the past 10+ years, FFTW is committed to helping Jamaica recover and rebuild.

FFTW’s Response To Hurricane Melissa

While the devastation of hurricanes may seem distant for those in the US, the impact of Hurricane Melissa hitting Jamaica hits closer to home to many.

Football for the World, a nonprofit that serves Omaha youth through after-school programming in North and South Omaha, has simultaneously been running football (soccer) programming across Jamaica, creating a cultural bridge for the past ten years. Historically, programming included donating soccer equipment collected in the US, and then distributing that equipment across Jamaica. FFTW has hosted nearly 100 volunteers, organizing clinics and tournaments, and creating opportunities for youth to play where opportunity was limited.

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, opportunity for play has been eliminated. Across the southern, western, and northwestern parts of the island, towns have been flattened, families have lost their homes and possessions, and lives have been lost.

While Football for the World has historically provided the necessary equipment for play, that has always come after the primary needs of housing, food, and water have been met. Now is an opportunity to step up and help communities at a critical time.
